The
trailer brake valve is located in the trailer's control module. It is connected to the pneumatic control circuit of the service brake system. When the electrical control circuit is working properly, the valve will close. When the control circuit fails, the valve will open. The following are some of the components of the trailer brake valve.
Trailer brake valves have relief and bleed valves, which allow the driver to release the brake when needed to maneuver a trailer. Likewise, emergency valves automatically activate when the trailer is connected to a tractor. However, if a trailer's emergency valve is disabled, the trailer may be able to move without compressed air.
The conventional compressed air brake system of a vehicle has two separate control circuits for the front and rear axles. The trailer control valve is connected to both of these control circuits through an auxiliary brake system. The valve controls the brakes of the trailer by releasing pressure at the valve's outlet line.
The trailer control valve also controls the pressure in the brake line. If you're replacing the valve, you'll need to remove the parking connection and make sure there's no brake system pressure before starting the replacement. You should also make sure that the vent is pointing downward and the system functions properly. This is important, as you don't want the valve to fail when you aren't expecting it to.
When you're pulling a trailer, the air pressure supply valve on the towing vehicle will shut off if there's any pressure in the towing vehicle's air brake system. The valve can be repositioned to allow the air pressure to be regulated. This allows the brakes to apply more quickly in an emergency.
The trailer's air lines are connected to the trailer's air tanks and supply line. If the connection is not connected correctly, the towing vehicle may lose air and the service brakes won't work. If the supply line is not connected properly, the trailer's air supply control will not release the spring brakes, either. Those problems can be prevented by installing a manual shutoff valve, which prevents air loss when the trailer is not in use.
